Judge Vaughn Walker Overturns Proposition 8

California has a lot to celebrate today: the overturning of Proposition 8, the state’s same-sex marriage ban, thanks to Judge Vaughn Walker.

Today, Vaughn Walker ruled: “Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license.”

“The state does not have an interest in enforcing private moral or religious beliefs without an accompanying secular purpose.”

“This just in: Equality won!” Ellen DeGeneres Tweeted after the news broke.

Although heterosexual, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie may just tie the knot, now that marriage is legal for all, as they had recently told Parade magazine, “Maybe we’ll get married when it’s legal for everyone else. I stand by that, although I took a lot of flak for saying it–hate mail from religious groups. I believe everyone should have the same rights. They say gay marriage ruins families and hurts kids. Well, I’ve had the privilege of seeing my gay friends being parents and watching their kids grow up in a loving environment.”

Governor Schwarzenegger said, “Today’s decision is by no means California’s first milestone, nor our last, on America’s road to equality and freedom for all people.”

Bloom Box Launch Unveils Energy Server

The energy-efficient ‘Bloom Box’ power servers at eBay offices in San Jose, Calif., Wednesday is a Silicon Valley startup that is working on a new way to produce cleaner energy.

The company says it has developed a new method of making fuel cells, thus generating electricity through an electrochemical reaction. A single cell can produce about 25W, enough for a low-energy lightbulb, and a stack of cells the size of a brick will power an average home. One Bloom box which is the size of a chest freezer and which contains several stacks of fuel cells, will produce 100KW, enough for 100 homes.

“Compared to the US national grid, this is about twice as efficient,” said K.R. Sridhar, cofounder of Bloom. “So your carbon footprint is about half. If you use a renewable fuel, you’re carbon neutral.”

“Bloom fuel cells are powering a portion of Google’s energy needs at our headquarters here in Mountain View — this is another on-site renewable energy source that we’re exploring to help power our facilities,” said Jamie Yood, a Google spokesman.

“We have a 400kW installation on Google’s main campus. Over the first 18 months the project has had 98% availability and delivered 3.8 million kWh of electricity.”

Customers already include Walmart, Google, eBay, Federal Express and Coca Cola. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Colin Powell and the heads of Google and Walmart were at the launch today.

Green Jobs for Youths with California Green Corps

With California in dire straights, the Govornator believes the children are the future, announcing on Monday that he is using stimulus money to fund the California Green Corps, a new California program that will train young adults between 16 and 24 years old to work in green-tech industry.

“The Green Corps will help underprivileged young people learn job skills while we create a well-trained workforce for clean technology and the green economy,” Governor Schwarzenegger said.

Schwarzenegger is allocating $10 million in stimulus funding as well as $10 million in public-private partnerships for California Green Corps, a program that plans to place at least 1,000 at-risk youth into green jobs over the next 20 months.

Under the program, all Green Corps participants will receive a stipend after completing job training focused on green jobs, continue their education, and contribute to their communities through community service.
