Colombia Celebrates Day Without Cars

A Day Without Cars

Colombia has the right idea when it comes to making citizens think about the environmental impact of their daily commute. Yesterday marked the country’s tenth annual Day Without Cars or “Dia Sin Coches,” a holiday which forces people to use alternative transportation for an entire day. This holiday of sorts sees people walking, using bikes, public transit, skateboards and even horses.

The highly-populated city of Bogata also encourages people to use the ‘Cicloruta’, a 354 km long network of bike paths throughout the city, which allow most people to safely and easily get from one point to another.

The ban on cars lasted from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., as studies have found that a single day with reduced traffic lowers air pollution levels by 53 percent.
