European Union countries have decided to support a ban on international trade in Atlantic bluefin tuna until stocks recover. The bloc has agreed to back a motion for a ban during next week’s meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
This follows the recent news that the United States was pledging their support, but Japan, where most bluefin tuna is eaten, is considering opting out of CITES controls. The EU is backing exemptions for traditional fishers, and deferring the ban for a year.
