China’s largest reported oil spill has now more than doubled in size to 165 sq. miles. The oil slick started spreading five days ago when a pipeline at a northeastern port exploded, sparking a massive fire that took almost a full day to contain. China Central Television has stated that the oil spilled so far is about 1,500 tons, or 400,000 gallons (1,500,000 liters.)
“Our priority is to collect the spilled oil within five days to reduce the possibility of contaminating international waters,” said Dalian’s vice mayor, Dai Yulin.
The pipeline is owned by China National Petroleum Corp., Asia’s biggest oil and gas producer by volume, and the Dalian port is China’s second largest for crude oil imports. So far, one death has been reported as being related to the fire.
