This is a six-frame movie of the 2005 YU55 asteroid that passed by Earth closer than the distance of the moon on November 8, 2011. The movie data is from radar data that was obtained on November 7, 2011 with NASA’s Goldstone Solar System Radar. The asteroid was appox. 860,000 miles from earth when the footage was taken and was 200,000 miles from Earth at it’s closest approach. The resolution is 4 meters per pixel and is looped 5 times.

We had no choice but to post this video of an elephant landing like a dumbo jumbo jet. The youtube description says it’s a PSA warning people about the dangers of importing foreign animals into a country, but we felt the need to post it to just warn people about the dangers of giant flying pacoderms. Consider yourselves warned!

Last night’s Emmy Awards opened with Jimmy Fallon stepping out of a smart car – leading into a kick ass opening song that had everyone buzzing.

As it turned out, the 2010 Emmy Awards are the greenest yet, with caterers preparing organic, sustainable food cooked on low emission grills. All food was served on reusable tableware/washable tablecloths. Also, hair and makeup artists were asked to use organic products on celebrities in addition to cruelty-free selections. Meanwhile, crew members drove supplies in eco-friendly vehicles.

Malibu resident Francie Rehwald wanted to build a house that was both eco-friendly and had curves. Her architect, David Hertz, suggested salvaging an old 747.  Hertz says he came up with the idea of using an airplane because it fit all the criteria Rehwald wanted. 

“It soon became apparent, that in fact, an airplane wing itself could work,” he wrote on his website. “In researching airplane wings and superimposing different airplane wing types on the site to scale, the wing of a 747, at over 2,500 sq ft, became an ideal configuration to maximize the views and provide a self-supporting roof with minimal additional structural support needed.”

If you watched the Super Bowl yesterday, you may have caught this Audi commercial about the green police. With music by Cheap Trick and great dialogue (“You picked the wrong day to mess with the ecosystem, plastic boy”) this Super Bowl commercial tops our favorites list.

YERT, which stands for “Your Environmental Road Trip,” is a one-year, 50-state video documentary road trip to explore and personalize sustainability across the country. All throughout the journey, Mark Dixon, Ben Evans, and Julie Evans released fast-paced videos online to share their adventures, including their very own “road rules” eco-challenges (like keeping all of their garbage in the car all year), visits to environmentally significant destinations, and most importantly, interviews with over 800 leaders, businesspeople, researchers, and average citizens from all walks of life. Their work has been featured on the Weather Channel, Voice of America, the San Francisco Chronicle, and on NPR stations nationwide via the environmental news program, “Living on Earth.” Now the team is working on “YERT Phase 2,” developing a feature film, additional short films, live presentations, and educational curriculum based on the project.

Security cameras at the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince recorded the Haiti earthquake on 12 January 2010 as the ground started to shake and a building in the distance crumbled to the ground. This live video was provided by the U.S. State Department.

A new “celebrity losing it” video has surfaced on YouTube featuring Matt Damon going off on Entourage star Adrian Grenier during a PSA shoot for the organization OneXOne.

Damon is slated to have a guest appearance on Entourage to promote his clean water organization.

Hugh Jackman appeared at a climate change forum for New York Climate Week‘s opening ceremony at the New York Public Library. Other speakers include world leaders including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

“I hope to be a voice for the billion people in developing countries who will be the hardest hit by changing weather patterns, by the droughts and floods that destroy their crops and threaten their food security,” Jackman said.
