Organic turkey is a far, far better choice this Thanksgiving, especially compared to the antibiotic-laden turkeys available at your local big box chain grocery store. In fact, those pale, plastic wrapped meatsicles can hardly be called birds.

For the true sustainable Thanksgiving dinner, you must find yourself a heritage turkey. Heritage Turkeys are the true ancestors of the industrial breeds of turkey that comprises 99.99% of the supermarket turkeys you see stacked by the hundreds at the grocery store.

Most breeds of heritage turkey were developed in the United States and Europe over hundreds of years, and were identified in the American Poultry Association’s turkey Standard of Perfection of 1874. These breeds include the Standard Bronze, Bourbon Red, Jersey Buff, Slate, Black Spanish, Narragansett and White Holland. Today’s steroid pumped turkeys grow to an average of 32 pounds over 18 weeks, whereas the Heritage turkeys can take up to 30 weeks to reach their market weight. You know, like a real animal.

These birds are a LOT more expensive, but that said, they are also a lot tastier, and a LOT better for the environment. Here’s a site which lists farms that raise these Heritage Turkeys. Enjoy your dinner with a clear conscience this year!

Perhaps the above photo illustrates what they’re filling their “meat” with? Taco Bell is under fire lately since it was revealed that their beef is only 35% meat.

Now a class action lawsuit has been filed in a California claiming that Taco Bell’s seasoned beef is comprised of mostly “non meat substances” including soybean oil and silicon dioxide, that wouldn’t measure up to USDA standards to be called beef.

“According to the tests that we have taken, the taco meat filling is again about 35% meat,” claims Dee Miles, an attorney representing the suit.

Taco Bell released the statement: “Taco Bell prides itself on serving high quality Mexican inspired food with great value. We’re happy that the millions of customers we serve every week agree. We deny our advertising is misleading in any way and we intend to vigorously defend the suit.”

If you find yourself hungry in Tucson, you might not want to stop by an eatery called Boca Tacos y Tequila, unless you feel like lion. Yes, lion.

Starting Feb. 16, Boca will be offering their latest delicacy: African lion tacos.

Owner Bryan Mazon started “exotic taco night” which includes alligator, elk, kangaroo, python, rattlesnake, and turtle and is adding lion to the menu to get some publicity, which is apparently working. Hey, we’re writing about it, right?

“I’m doing the African lion to get my name out,” Mazon said. “I’ve never tried it myself, but this one really caught my eye.”

Most of Boca’s exotic tacos range between $3 and $4, but the lion tacos will cost $8.75 apiece. Mazon told the Arizona Daily Star that he expects to lose money on the lion, but is in it for exposure.

“In all reality, what I want is just people to know that I’m here,” he said. “That’s the way to do it. You can’t get these tacos anywhere else.”

Join the Facebook group to stop Boca from selling lion meat.

If the massive bird and fish deaths have been freaking you out – here’s a bit of comforting news – experts are saying that although what has been happening lately is definitely obscure, it’s certainly not the sign of the apocalypse.

Approximately 500 dead birds were discovered in Louisiana this week and on New Year’s Eve, 5,000 red-winged blackbirds dropped from the sky in Beebe, Arkansas. Moreover, recently Swedish authorities have been investigating the deaths of 100 jackdaws found in a street in Falkoping.

“We made an autopsy on five of the birds yesterday and found internal bleeding but no external lesions,” said Marianne Elvander of Sweden’s National Veterinary Institute.

In Arkansas, the bird deaths have so far been attributed to fireworks. Because the birds may have been roosting, experts surmise that the fireworks startled them to such a degree, it caused them to die. Mass deaths of animals are strange, but they do happen and with the fear-mongoring media blitz surrounding the bird deaths in Arkansas, other incidents which would otherwise go unreported are receiving attention, thus making the events seem related.

“This is a classic example of freak events coinciding,” said zoologist Petter Boeckman at the Norwegian Natural History Museum.

Meanwhile, Anderson Cooper is interviewing former “Growing Pains” actor turned fundamental Christian Kirk Cameron on the matter. Even Cameron had to admit that it was “kind of silly” to think that dead birds is a sign of the apocalypse.

Former talk show phenomenon Montel Williams is in trouble with the law after he went through airport security with a metal smoking pipe cops say is used to smoke marijuana.

Milwaukee TSA busted Williams when he tried to make it through security with the pipe in his carry on, which set of metal detectors. Though there was no residue in the pipe, Williams was held and released after paying a nominal fine for possession of drug paraphernalia. The sheriff’s department told TMZ that Williams was cooperative.

Montel is vocal of his support for medical marijuana — which he uses to manage pain related to multiple sclerosis – a disease of the central nervous system that affects the ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to communicate with each other.

Something eerily apocalyptic went down in Arkansas just before the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve. Five thousand birds fell from the sky. Yes, cue Twilight Zone music.

The next morning in Beebe, Arkansas, people found the corpses of birds all over the roadways and in front yards. Some speculate that the fireworks scared them – which is an interesting hypothesis since fireworks go off as part of our culture on occasion and birds falling from the sky as a result isn’t typical – however, Keith Stephens , a spokesman for the Arkansas Fish and Gaming Commission said that in rural areas, where birds can be more concentrated, fireworks going off while birds are roosting could cause such trauma.

Paul McCartney’s trouble ex Heather Mills might be having more, well, trouble. File this one under shocking, but Mills’ vegan restaurant might be going under.

Out of the Beatle money, Mills purchased vegan eatery VBites shut down for the winter season, but rumors are swirling that the restaurant is in trouble and may not reopen.

A cafe insider revealed, “I understand Heather has been hemorrhaging money on VBites for a while now. A six month ‘holiday’ isn’t usual.”

Mills denies these rumors, however, saying, “VBites had a great summer, the success has brought us many opportunities to become worldwide,” she Tweeted. ”We are so excited to start our franchise projects and spread the Vegan ethics, training classes, cookery classes now our cafe is in its wintery weather season. Keep updated on VBites.com and thanks for all your continued support.”

A giant koi was apparently caught at a lake in France but now some are calling the story a fake, though marine experts say that a fish that size and color is very possible.

The 30-pound koi carp is the largest of its kind ever caught in the wild after it was fished out of a lake in the south of France by keen angler Raphael Biagini. Although there is Internet speculation that this photograph has been doctored, experts say that these fish can reach up to 90 lbs.

Do not adjust your computer monitors. Yes, this is a frog. On the end of a pencil. Yes, he is smaller than the average frog and yes, he is a damn cute amphibian!

The world’s smallest amphibian has reecently been discovered and has been dubbed by scientists: the Microhyla nepenthicola.

Adult frogs of this species range between 10.6 and 12.8 mm. How cute is that?

“Amphibians are quite sensitive to changes in their surroundings, so we hope the discovery of these miniature frogs will help us to understand what changes in the global environment are having an impact on these fascinating animals,” said Conservation International’s Dr Robin Moore.

Egg supplier Wright County Egg has issued an egg recall in the states of Colorado, California and Minnesota, suspected being behind a recent spike in salmonella poisonings. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention averages around 50 reports of salmonella cases each week, but in the last few months, the agency has been getting about 200 cases a week. Eggs that bear the name Lucerne, Albertsons, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps are all from the Wright County Egg supplier.

If you’ve had eggs recently, watch for symptoms of salmonella poisoning, which include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramping that tend to develop approximately 12 – 72 hours after ingesting the contaminated food. Most people recover on their own without any help from a doctor, though infants and the elderly are at risk and should seek immediate medical risk. Also, if you are of good health and think you may have salmonella poisoning, you are still advised to seek medical help so the outbreak can be documented properly. Most people recover within four to seven days.
