Houses are being threatened in the Santa Cruz Mountains as fires have forced the evacuation of 2,400 people from their homes. With winds blowing, the fires grew overnight to 4,100 acres as hundreds of firefighters attempted to calm the flames, which are reportedly only 5 percent contained.
“It is a significant fire that is burning in a rural, inaccessible, steep terrain with vegetation that has been stressed by the drought,” said CalFire spokeswoman Julie Hutchinson. “It is like having firewood in your fireplace that is dry and ready to burn.”
“There are a number of fires throughout the state, but this fire has a large number of residents and homes threatened,” said CalFire spokesman Daniel Berlant. “Any time we have this kind of population at risk, we take it seriously and make sure to have resources on hand to protect residents and property.”

Despite massive efforts by firefighters, wildfires seem invincible. Kudos to the Sta Cruz Chapter which opened two evacuation centers. Chapter provided water, snacks and comfort kits. Chapter Disaster Operations Center was set up and is deploying members as needed. Hope it’s put out soon.
